Little Golden Books & Illustrator Eloise Wilkin

Little Golden Books are a childhood staple. Most of us have grown up reading these little stories of wonder and fun. Some of us adults still love them for their precious stories and illustrations. I, for one love the books illustrated by Eloise Wilkin.

Eloise Wilkin was an author and illustrator of over 50 Little Golden Books. Once you have seen one of her illustrations, you will recognize her unique style. Her children have the wide-eyed innocence of youth. Many of the picture books she illustrated have become classics of American children’s literature. She has been referred to as the “soul of Little Golden Books”.

Eloise Wilkin was born Eloise Margaret Burns  on March 30, 1904 and died on October 4, 1987.   Her watercolor and color pencil illustrations evoke a yesteryear feel. She wrote and/or illustrated over 50 Little Golden Books. Her sister Esther married the brother of Eloise’s husband. Esther Wilkin also wrote books that Eloise illustrated.  Eloise Elkins books are still very collectible. Last week I found 10 vintage Little Golden Books all illustrated by Eloise Wilkins.

In 1960 Vogue Dolls, Inc. launched the first doll designed by Eloise Wilkin which was the “Baby Dear” doll as seen in the above photo. There were 12 inch and 18 inches sizes and they sold for $6 and $12. Eloise designed eight dolls for Vogue and Madame Alexander. The two books: Baby Dear and So Big were written by her sister Esther Wilkin and illustrated by Eloise. These 2 books feature the Eloise Wilkin dolls
